In this video lesson series I will show you a note-for-note breakdown of how to play “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” by the great Jimi Hendrix.

This song literally needs no introduction, so I will keep this short. First off, in order to play along with the original recording and this lesson you will need to tune your guitar down a half-step to Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb. After that you will be ready to go!

In the first video lesson I will show you how to play the instantly recognizable guitar intro that is probably one of the most famous guitar riffs ever written. In additional to that the first lesson will contain the verse and chorus riffs.

In this first video and pretty much every lesson in this series, try to remember that playing every single note exactly like Hendrix does will be impossible. Many of the guitar riffs are very random and more instinctual than precise riffs that are repeated.

If there is a phrase of notes that are very distinct I will show you how to play them note-for-note. But for much of the song Hendrix will be repeating the same riff with slight variations every time through. It is more important to know how to play a standard version of this riff and make your own variations just like Hendrix does instead of always trying to reproduce every note just like the recording.

In the second video lesson I will begin to take a look at Jimi’s solos that are found throughout “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)”. We will be going through these solos note-for-note but as always, getting the structure and the overall vibe of the solo is the most important thing to confidently perform it.

So I hope you enjoy the lesson series and in-depth look at the guitar style of the legendary Jimi Hendrix!
